FIREWORK SAFETY
To avoid injury and have a fun holiday, please follow these firework safety rules.
BUY ONLY LEGAL FIREWORKS
Purchase fireworks from a reputable dealer, and only light them off where they are legal. NEVER buy M-80s, Cherry Bombs, or other such things. They are dangerous federally banned explosives, not fireworks. Just because reservations may sell them does not mean they are legal.
FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS
This is self-explanatory
USE IN PRESENCE OF ADULTS
Never allow young children to light fireworks. Adults should be present at all times fireworks are being used.
KEEP SUPPLY OF FIREWORKS IN SAFE AREA
Store your unlit fireworks far away from the firing area, preferably in a box to prevent damage or accidental ignition.
USE ONLY IN AN OPEN AREA
Fireworks should only be used in an area free from houses, cars, and dry vegetation.
NEVER STAND OVER A FIREWORK
When lighting a firework, keep your body away from it. Reach your arm out to light it.
USE LIGHT WHEN DARK
If it's too dark out to see the fuse, use a small flashlight. If necessary, tag the fuses beforehand with a snip of masking tape so they can easily be seen.
LIGHT FUSE, GET AWAY
Light only one item at a time (unless you're doing a finale), and move away quickly once the fuse is lit.
DON'T THROW OR HOLD
DO NOT hold fireworks, especially bottle rockets, firecrackers, or roman candles. They were not made to be held, as they could malfunction and cause injury. The only exception to this rule are sparklers.
DON'T MODIFY OR RELIGHT
If the fuse seems to burn out, don't approach the firework. It could be a hangfire (where the fuse doesn't completely burn out, but just smolders) and relight any moment. Leave any firework the fails to ignite alone for at least five minutes before approaching it.
KEEP WATER READY
Always keep a bucket of water or fire extinguisher ready in case of an emergency. Better yet, get one of those massive Super Soaker water guns. They work great for dousing just about anything.
PUT USED FIREWORKS IN WATER
Keep a bucket of water nearby in which to drop in used fireworks. A typical 5 gallon bucket works great for this.
